With price tag of less than sixty pounds, there are few reasons why you shouldn’t own a multi-function Epson SX405. The Stylus SX405 is a good-looking device, finished in dark grey plastic and with a gloss black scanner lid, it sports most of the mod-cons. It comes with a 6cm LCD, a 1200 x 2400dpi scanner, a card-reader that’s compatible with all the major formats, and some remarkable performance claims. Most of these claims equal great performance in the real world expect for one and that the 34ppm claimed printing speed. Realistically the SX405 is only capable of 5ppm on a good quality setting and where Epson got the 34 pages figure from is anyone’s guess. The results of testing the SX405’s scanner where good but not stunning but you can’t really expect a device at this price to excel in all areas. It a similar story for the photo copier which performs well but is slightly lacking as it’s limited to nine copies at a time and coupled with the fact that the SX405 is slow at printing mean it’s not best suited to high volumes. One thing we haven’t covered so far is running cost and this is an important consideration when purchasing an inkjet printer, as in some cases the printer ink cartridges can cost more than the printer itself. Epson SX405 ink cartridges consist if four individual ink cartridges each of which can be changed independently of each other and although this is economical in the long run a set of genuine Epson inks still costs £30. This maybe reasonable compared to genuine inks for it competitors it doesn’t seem so great when you can buy a set of compatible inks for half the price.
